چکیده

Revolutions, in which he defined a paradigm as a belief which is generally accepted in a certain specific generation [1]. He stated that one paradigm gradually transitions to the next paradigm through revolutionary activities when a new scientific discovery is found. He called this transition a ‘paradigm shift’ [1]. Across the world, healthcare providers used to believe that paper-based medical records were necessary to provide healthcare. Now we are beginning to see a ‘paradigm shift’ in the field of health informatics as many healthcare organizations computerize patients’ medical records. According to a report recently published by the European Union (EU), many hospitals and clinics are using electronic patient records or Electronic Health Records systems. Eighty-four percent of hospitals and 93% of clinics in the EU have adopted some kind of electronic patient record systems [2,3]. In the United States, many healthcare professionals have implemented Electronic Health Record systems [4,5]. The federal government even finances medical doctors when they use standardized Electronic Medical Records systems [6]. This paradigm shift from paper-based to digital electronic records brings many potential benefits. Among them, there are two critical advantages. One is the prevention of duplicative tests by sharing patient information among medical facilities, which would inevitably result in cost-saving. The other is improved quality of care. Providers can share patients’ healthcare information with each other; therefore, they are able to make better healthcare decisions. These benefits only exist where there are electronic patient or health records systems with the ability to exchange patients’ information, known as interoperability. However, Principles of Health Interoperability HL7 and SNOMED

Towards Semantic Interoperability in Healthcare: Ontology Mapping from SNOMED-CT to HL7 version 3

One of the most successful Healthcare Information Models is version 2 of the Health Level 7 (HL7) standard. However, this standard has various problems, mainly its lack of semantic interoperability. This shortfall was addressed in HL7 Version 3, a newer standard which has been designed to solve this problem. Total semantic interoperability cannot be achieved without defined terminology, and to ...

Toward the Interoperability of HL7 v3 and SNOMED CT: A Case Study Modeling Mobile Clinical Treatment

Semantic interoperability in healthcare can be achieved by a tighter coupling of terminology and HL7 message models. In this paper, we highlight the difficulty of achieving this goal, but show how it can become attainable by basing HL7 message models on SNOMED CT concepts and relationships. We then demonstrate how this methodology has been applied to a set of clinical observations for use in th...

Semantic validation of the use of SNOMED CT in HL7 clinical documents

BACKGROUND The HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) constrains the HL7 Reference Information model (RIM) to specify the format of HL7-compliant clinical documents, dubbed CDA documents. The use of clinical terminologies such as SNOMED CT® further improves interoperability as they provide a shared understanding of concepts used in clinical documents. However, despite the use of the RIM and o...

The HL7 Approach to Semantic Interoperability

Health Level 7 (HL7) is an international standards development organisation in the domain of healthcare information technology. Initially the mission of HL7 was to enable data exchange via the creation of syntactic standards for point-to-point messaging. For some 10 years, however, HL7 has increasingly conceived its mission as one of creating standards for semantic interoperability in healthcar...
